Spin-polarized electron tunneling detected using a scanning tunneling microscope

摘要
Spin-polarized electron tunneling from a ferromagnetic Ni sample to a nonmagnetic scanning tunneling microscope tip (Pt-Ir) is observed by detecting circularly polarized light emission. The results indicate negative spin polarization near the Fermi level and positive polarization ca 1 eV below it in Ni, which is in agreement with previous spin-polarized photoemission results.
