History of the Development of Marine Economy in China

The marine economy is related to geography, economic resource, environmental science, ecology, management science and so on. The main pattern of marine economy is marine industry. Although the development of ocean in China is late, the marine industries improve rapidly. This article divides China's marine economy into three stages: the first is early stage (1970s-1990), the second is formative stage (1991-2000), and the third is perfecting stage (2001-present). Experienced from the history, the coastal areas should be zoned according to marine resources and environment carrying capacity in order to keep the rapid economic development. Identifying the industrial distribution and speed of economic development in different functional areas, and striving to balance the connection among coastal economic development, resource allocation and the marine environment are important.
