Intraocular sarcoma in a pet rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus f. dom)

The ophthalmological examination of a 6-year-old pet rabbit revealed conjunctival and episcleral congestion, corneal vascularisation, a diffuse corneal oedema, a secondary glaucoma, and an intraocular neoplastic growth at the nasal iridal base. The pathomorphological examination after enucleation revealed an intra-ocular sarcoma of possible uveal origin accompanied by a suppurative inflammation. The tumour expressed immunoreactivity for vimentin and a smooth muscle actin. These findings indicate a myofibroblastic differentiation of the neoplasm. Generally, intraocular neoplasms are rare in pet rabbits, though they should still be considered as a differential diagnosis for other ocular disorders, particularly inflammatory changes.
