Infections complicating solid organ transplantation

The requirement for immune suppression after solid organ transplantation increases the risk of infection with a myriad of organisms. There are many unique and evolving aspects of infection after solid organ transplantation. Advances in immunosuppressive therapy and improved protocols for infection prophylaxis have resulted in changes in the timing and clinical presentation of opportunistic infections. Vigilance in the diagnostic evaluation of suspected infection in the solid organ transplant recipient is essential. This article reviews the basic evaluation and treatment options for many of the infectious conditions peculiar to the immunosuppressed patient.
