EVALUATION OF LIVESTOCK SYSTEMS IN THE MUNICIPALITY OF CHARAPAN, PERTAINING TO THE PUREPECHA REGION, STATE OF MICHOACAN, MEXICO

This research work was conducted in the Municipality of Charapan, in the State of Michoacan, which is located in the region known as Purepecha Plateau. At a first stage, 22 producers were surveyed to collect social and economic information. A second stage included organizing a workshop with producers to prepare participatory budgets where producers were grouped into two work groups. The obtained results showed production units with 6 to 9 hectares and an average herd size of 21 animals. The main crops the producers grow are oats and corn. Although high production costs were seen, which were associated to a heavy use of concentrates, a low productivity of crops and animals, several producers with attractive gross margins were identified.
