摘要：
Achieving equality between women and men was one of the ten commitments agreed to by the heads of state at the World Summit for Social Development and is a main priority of the international women's movement. Taking the decade of the seventies as a starting point, this article briefly reviews the progress that has been made in improving women's status and reducing gender inequalities, and charts the challenges ahead. It emphasises the situation of women in developing countries, where the gaps are the largest and the challenges the greatest.
