In 2019, a heated debate erupted in Germany around the compensation claims of the former royal house of Hohenzollern. This article will first set out the legal background to the case. It will then examine how the debate unfolded and how the case was discussed within historical literature, and in politics and the media. Finally, it will be shown that, much like the famous Historikerstreit of the 1980s, this debate is not only about the collaboration of the Hohenzollerns with the Nazis and the associated political and moral positioning. Rather, it has become above all a battleground for the interpretation of Germany's recent past and the politics of history in today's Federal Republic.
