Cretaceous belemnites of Mexico III.: The Albian Neo- and Mesohibolites of the "Mexican Solnhofen" Tepexi de Rodriguez (State of Puebla) and their biostratonorny (Lower Cretaceous)

The fine laminated yellowish and red algal limestones of the Tlayua Quarry near Tepexi de Rodriguez (Puebla) are called the "Mexican Solnhofen" because of their bearing of abundant and excellently preserved invertebrate and vertebrate fossils. Biostratigraphically important macrofossils are belemnites of the genus Neohibolites and Mesohibolites and badly preserved ammonites of the genus Mortoniceras, both confirming Middle and Upper Albian ages. In contrary to other Middle Albian localities of central and northern Mexico, the Neohibolitids are restricted in Tepexi to the N. minimus group with N. in. pinguis, N. m. obtusus, and N. in. clavaformis. In the Upper Albian, to the latter subspecies N. praeultimus supervene. Mesohibolites semicanaliculatus occurs in Tepexi in the lower part of the Middle Albian, strati graphically higher than it does in Europe. The Tlayua Beds of Tepexi are compared with the Nusplinger Plattenkalke of southern Germany because of biostratonomic interpretations.
