BSE-prevention measures concerning live cattle are not only designed to prevent the infections of humans with the deadly BSE-agent but also to prevent spreading the agent within the animal population. Accordingly, the most important BSE-preventive measures with respect to livestock besides excluding BSE-suspects from slaughter - are the feed ban, the cohort culling and the cattle registration, without which the animals to be killed within the framework of BSE eradication could not be securely identified.
