Qualitative research in education was rare but not absent in the middle of the 20th century. Historians should consider rereading old ethnographic dissertations in order to shed new light on familiar topics. This article probes a 1951 Harvard University doctoral thesis on the formal and informal organization of an American junior high school. The author sketches how Progressive education characterized the interactions among the teachers without altering their traditional classroom pedagogy.
