"The Tragedy of War". Adolfo Omodeo and Classical Greece

Adolfo Omodeo is widely known as a historian of Christianity, of the Italian, Risorgimento and the French XIXth century. In addition, he also planned to write a history of classical Greece. This paper deals with Omodeo's peculiar perception of Greek history; it aims to show what he could have written about this topic had he not prematurely deceased in 1946. On the basis of the references to ancient Greece included in Omodeo's political writings of 1945-1946, the paper highlights the association drawn by the historian between classical Greece in the aftermath of the Peloponnesian War and post-war Italy.
