摘要：

The study of urban history has experienced a remarkable growth since the 1980s in China. In this article, the author, a leading scholar in the field, offers a general survey of its development over the past three decades. He lists a number of important works published in the period, discusses the theories and practices of urban history study, analyzes the successes and shortcomings of current scholarship, and offers thoughts on how to improve future study in this subfield. In particular, he sees the need to combine the study of urban and regional history and to pursue more comparative research of cities in and outside China.
