When reconstruction demands more than simple coverage, free-tissue transfer affords the opportunity to replace more than one tissue type or function in a single-stage procedure by using compound tissue flaps. Strictly speaking, free compound flaps are tissue units that include more than one tissue plane. The lexicon, however, has come to imply a tissue unit that includes more than one functionally relevant tissue type.
