Achieving Competence-Based Curricula for Engineering Education in Spain Introduction

Achieving competence-based curricula for engineering education in Spain is discussed. Social and economic advances occurring in Spain over recent decades have measurably outdistanced the country's systems of higher education, in the field of engineering. European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is aimed at ensuring that coursework and degrees, from bachelor through doctoral levels. The EHEA has also proposed a new teaching/learning paradigm in which student performance would henceforth center primarily on student competence. The competence paradigm consequently emphasizes student performance through class work as well as through peer evaluation and self-improvement. A list of core competences in which functional competences largely outweigh more generic competences, such as the ability to formulate and solve engineering problems, engage in interpersonal communication, and appreciate multicultural diversity has also been formulated by the committee.
