Maternal memoir as eco-memoir

Maternal Memoir as Eco-memoir" draws attention to environment as interiority or environment as actual body in three recent pregnancy memoirs by U. S. women, biologist Sandra Steingraber, psychologist Lauren Slater, and novelist Louise Erdrich. In exploring the daily assaults of the world on oneself and one' s offspring, in reviewing their own environmental histories, these mothers take on or solidify their roles as environmentally conscious and environmentally activist. They also inspire their readers to undertake similar work on behalf of those at the top of the food chain-fetuses and nursing infants.
