Two-millimeter observations of the starburst galaxy M82

The 2 mm continuum emission in the nuclear region of the archetypal starburst galaxy M82 was mapped with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope using a bolometer array (NOBA). The 2 mm map shows a central concentration With a,Single peak which is coincident with the 1.3 mm and 3.3 mm continuum peaks and an extended component that reaches up to 400 pc above and below the galactic plane. The good agreement in size and morphology between the extended structures and the dust lanes seen in the optical image or the spurlike features seen in CO maps suggests that these structures are associated with dust outflows. From a comparison between a 2 mm map and CO maps, it is suggested that the 2 mm continuum traces the distribution of neutral gas more precisely than does the CO emission.
