Perioperative thromboprophylaxis in obstetrics and gynecology

Perioperative venous thromboembolic disease (VTE) continues to be a clinical challenge and is a major source of morbidity and mortality in obstetrics and gynecology. About 15-38% of untreated gynecological patients develop deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and often suffer from fatal pulmonary embolism (PE) or non-fatal thrombotic diseases, such as post-thrombotic: syndrome, for the rest of their lives, The use of effective strategies to prevent VTE has significantly reduced the incidences of VTE-associated diseases in obstetrics and gynecology. A number of different agents has been shown to be efficacious in reducing the overall incidence of DVT and PE. The use of preventive measures has to be adapted to different patient and procedure-related risk profiles.
