The present contribution summarizes the discoveries and discusses the unique chemical and physical characteristics of the p-type "zero" phases of layered M(m)A(r)Q(n-1)Cu(n)O(m+r+2n+/-delta) or M-m((A))r((Q))(n-1)n copper oxide structures, i.e. 01(n-1)n and 02(n-1)n, including the systems LaCuO3-delta (0101), (Ba,La)Y(Cu,Fe)(2)O5+delta (0112) and Sr2Can-1CunO2+2n+/-delta [0((Sr))2(n-1)n] as well as the newest high-pressure synthesized Ba2Can-1CunO2+2n+/-delta [o((Ba))2(n-1)n; n = 2-4] phases and their c-axis expanded, water-containing derivatives obtained upon exposure of the pristine phases to (humid) air.
