Name-based Routing in Virtual Automation Networks

The usage of wide area networks (WAN) including public Networks as the Internet for the run-time communication of automation devices applying standardised field bus protocols according IEC-61158 requires the creation of a respective, open communication and integration architecture on the part of automation, to cope with the changed basis of formerly pure homogeneous island solutions towards heterogeneous networks [1]. The development of such an open communication and integration architecture is tackled by the project VAN Virtual Automation Networks - funded by the European Commission within the 6th frame program. An important part of this architecture is the name-based addressing and routing, which is explained in this contribution.
