We have initiated a program with the aim of studying the stellar/gas kinematics and ionization sources in ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). Integral field optical spectroscopy of a small sample of ULIRGs covering different stages of the merger sequence are being obtained with the INTEGRAL system (Arribas et al. 1998). INTEGRAL is a fiber based 3D spectrograph that generates about 200 spectra over a region which can vary from 8 " x 7 " to 34 " x 30 ", at different spatial resolutions. Preliminary results for the ultraluminous infrared prototype Mrk 273 fully illutrate the capabilities and potential of 3D spectrographs such as INTEGRAL for the study of ULIRGs.
