Fourteen evaluations of UNICEF and UNAIDS programmes in sub-Saharan Africa are reviewed and placed within the context of the HIV/ AIDS pandemic in Africa. Presentation of the evaluations is organised by five areas: "breaking the silence, ending the stigma", "prevention among youth", "prevention of mother to child transmission", "children orphaned by AIDS" and "care and support of women and children." Lessons learned in each programme area are highlighted. A general point is made that successful development programmes must achieve national coverage and also be based on good quality processes.
