Alcohol consumption and risk of stroke

Alcohol is consumed by millions of people worldwide. Epidemiologic studies have estimated that 20%-50% of hospitalizations, 50% of emergencies, 15% of medical examinations, and 50% of sudden deaths, suicides and homicides are associated with heavy alcohol consumption. It is well known that excessive alcohol drinking has a negative impact on a majority of organs. However, numerous relevant studies have shown that moderate alcohol consumption has many positive effects as well as a protective effect on ischemic stroke. This paper discusses the correlation of moderate alcohol consumption and the risk of stroke.
