The future of nursing: Succession planning

Succession planning is a broadly cited concept applied across multiple disciplines to recruit, select, retain, and develop motivated individuals who eventually assume leadership roles in an organization. Although succession planning is widely accepted and is acknowledged in the literature as a prevalent organizational practice, succession planning has not been implemented by some institutions of higher education for the nurse administrator role. Recognizing the impact effective succession planning has on the continuity of nursing education and the potential impact on the future of nursing, this article explores the importance of a framework for and components of succession plans. Unlike other articles related to succession planning, this article correlates succession planning with selected ACEN Criteria.
