The paper industry has been seeking to replace the idea of maintenance with one of runnability In today's fiercely contested markets, even this is not enough, and machines have to be managed to secure continuous improvements in both utilization rate and product quality. Those companies able to harness knowhow in both production and maintenance in achieving these goals will be the ones to succeed in the future. In the article on pages 215-218, Juhani Niskanen from the University of Oulu deals with the approaches and trends chat will characterize maintenance in the future.
