Relationship between formulation, compression strength and antacid activity: Application to magnesium carbonate-aluminium hydroxide tablets

The aim of this work was to study the effect of formulation and compression strength on antacid activity of co-dried magnesium carbonate and aluminium hydroxide tablets, Pharmacotechnical tests have been made on tablets to determine their principal characteristics. The antacid activity was evaluated in vitro by the modified Holbert-Noble method, It is influenced by compression strength, type of filler and presence of disintegrants. The type of disintegrant does not affect significantly the performance of magnesium-aluminium antacid tablets because their presence accelerates the time to reach the maximum pH-value.
