Number of vehicle probes and estimation of mean travel times on urban arterials

Vehicles probes are increasingly being used to collect travel time data for incident detection, trip planning, route guidance, evaluation of control strategies, and development of models for highway capacity analysis. It is not clear how the number of probes in the traffic stream affects the reliability of travel time estimates along signalized urban arterials. Based on computer simulation, this study examines the characteristics of travel time on signalized urban arterials and discusses how errors in travel time estimation are related to the number of vehicle probes.
