The endoscopic treatment with CO-2-laser for Zenker's diverticulum

CO2-laser microendoscopic treatment of Zenker's diverticulum was performed on 26 patients during the period of March 1995 until March 1997. The results and complications are discussed. Cervical emphysema occurred in two cases and a postoperative hemorrhage occurred in one case. The low complication rate and the rapid postoperative oral intake reduce hospitalization stay. After an average follow-up of 12 month, 25 patients were highly (N = 22) or fairly (N = 3) satisfied and one patient underwent a second endoscopic operation for a recurrence. According to the low complication rate and the good functional results, the CO2-laser endoscopic surgery can be considered the treatment of choice for patients with Zenker's diverticulum.
