Chronic pain, substance abuse and addiction

Managing chronic pain in a patient with a history of addiction can be a particularly challenging task. Addiction is a chronic disease that complicates the plan of care, but its presence does not preclude adequate pain management. Chronic pain in patients with a history of addictive disease can be successfully treated with opiate analgesia; it just requires caution and careful monitoring of medication use.
