摘要
Parallel derive is presented as a new arts-based research method. The origins of derive (drift) as a means of artistic expression in the 20th century and its development up to the present day is outlined. The potentialities of a specific type of derive, parallel derive, are highlighted making use of the elements it provides: parallelism, sequential rhythm, synchrony, empathy, connection, a playful component and a comparison of contexts. The specificity of parallel derive within arts-based research and the difference in respect of derive as an artistic action are presented, positioning the proposal in a so-cio-critical paradigm and in relation to the principles of unpredictability, uncertainty and intertwining. The possibilities that this method offers to different disciplines and academic fields are shown. It is also proposed how portable technologies can contribute to the collection of graphics, photographic, sound, auditory or audiovisual data for the elaboration of graphic discourse, photo essays, auto-ethnographic stories, third-party narratives, sound maps, cartography, or locating objects through this method. We conclude with an event score of the parallel drift research method as an orientation in the planning of other investigations and, we establish its criteria of validation as a research method, with repercussions for the fields of the arts, humanities, social and natural sciences.
