This chronological evaluation of eighteen Poe biographies published from 1877 through 2005 elaborates the strengths and weaknesses of each work. The analysis underscores the virtues of excellent biography, including clear writing ample research, close reading, and keen sensitivity. The long view offered here provides a breadth that facilitates ready access and thoughtful comparison.
