Web-based real-teme distance learning in veterinary education: Advantages and drawbacks

摘要
The increasing demand in all fields of educational programs adapted to the specific needs of a heterogeneous and demanding clientele poses major pedagogical and organizational challenges to our teaching systems. To complicate matters, distance learning is often the preferred option that enables individuals to adapt their educational activities to the ever-increasing demands of professional and private life. The new Web-based real-time distance learning platforms (synchronous mode), which enable educators and students to get together at the same time in adapted virtual space, should theoretically be able to make up for many of these shortcomings (Souya et al., 2001). In fact, these new tools allow users to exchange digital material, see one another through the use of small cameras, and hold discussions using microphones. Accordingly, the educators can assess their students' knowledge at any time, ask them questions or lead a discussion. A low-speed Internet connection, standard computer and microphone are generally all that is needed to enable anyone, anywhere on the planet, to participate in these real-time learning sessions.
