Oxides doped with rare-earth ions for reversible optical data recording

Photoluminescence spectra of Ca(Mg)O : Eu, Sm oxides of alkaline-earth metals doped with ions of rare-earth elements, were studied. Photoluminescence stimulated in these materials at room temperature with IR radiation was observed for the first time. The stimulated photoluminescence in Ca(Mg)O : Eu, Sm was studied for various impurity concentrations. The samples were preliminarily exposed to UV radiation at wavelengths of 250 and 488 nm. A physical model of the mechanism of photoluminescence and stimulated photoluminescence in the materials under study is proposed. It is shown that alkali-earth oxides doped with rare-earth ions can be used for repeated optical data recording.
