Determination of the Charge of Fe(III) Polynuclear Hydroxo Complexes in Solution

The behavior of the complex-forming anions I-, SO42-, and PO43- in the presence of iron(III) poly nuclear complexes was studied by dialysis. The I- ions do not react with polynuclear iron complexes. The retention values found for the SO42- anions were highly scattered; however, in general, they indicate that the SO42- anions react with polynuclear Fe(III) species in solution. In the case of PO43-, a pronounced effect of their interaction with polynuclear Fe(III) species in solution was found. A method for determination of the charge of iron(III) polynuclear complexes was proposed. The method is based on neutralization of a polynuclear complex by addition of phosphate anions. The charge of iron(III) polynuclear complexes does not exceed +0.3 at pH 3.0 and an iron concentration of 10-3 mol/l.
