Industrial processes are nonlinear, complex, and incompletely known, in general. Since modelling, whether analytical or experimental, is difficult for such systems, the control problem itself can be quite challenging. The paper addresses several important requirements in controlling an industrial process. Suitable control architectures for a category of industrial processes are described. Specifically, an intelligent supervisory control system with a layered architecture is presented, where the top layer consists of "intelligent" modules that utilize knowledge representation and reasoning based on fuzzy logic. A control architecture for "intelligent" sharing of components in a multi-workcell process is also outlined. Several industrial applications in the area of fish processing that have been carried out in the author's laboratory are described. Copyright (C) 1998 IFAC.
