Prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome among construction apprentices

The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the prevalence of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) in construction workers during their apprenticeship. To determine the prevalence of CTS, 207 apprentices from the sheet metal and electrical trades were evaluated. Nerve conduction studies and clinical exams were performed on both hands of each apprentice. A case definition of CTS included symptoms as well as an abnormal nerve study across the carpal tunnel. The data indicated that 10.6% of the apprentices fit the case definition of CTS in at least one hand. The prevalence of CTS increased with the number of years in the apprentice program. Although many apprentices had symptoms, history, and nerve studies suggesting CTS, very few had seen a physician for their condition. Because many of the CTS cases go undetected, ergonomic education and CTS screenings may help identify cases earlier and prevent permanent disability.
