Fabrication of metal oxide ceramic functionally graded materials by slip casting

Translucent alumina ceramics having high transmittance as well as high mechanical properties with the average grain size less than 1 mu m was fabricated using the fine alpha-alumina powder. There were no impurities or secondary phases which may cause the light scattering at the grain boundaries. Fabrication of the metal/ceramic functionally graded materials for the sealing cap has been done using slip casting method. Processing factors of the slip affecting the gradient structure are clarified and classification has been done. In the sintered body, the formation of solid solution or compound at interface between the particles causes the formation of fine FGMs. The properties of tungsten/alumina FGMs shows the possibility for the application to the sealing cap.
