Mechanical properties of Ni-Mn-Ga and Ni-Ti-based melt-spun ribbons

Several Ni-Mn-Ga and Ni-Ti-based ribbons have been produced by melt-spinning. Their fracture characteristics and moduli of elasticity have been determined, as well as shape memory properties by thermomechanical cycling. Ni-Mn-Ga ribbons exhibit brittle fracture, but 0.6 % recoverable strain under 25 MPa tensile stress is obtained. Ni-Ti-based ribbons have better macroscopic quality and functional properties: Ni-50Ti-25Cu shows one way shape memory effect close to 2% under 50 MPa, and equiatomic NiTi reaches 7.5 % under the same load. For NiTi ribbons a two-way shape memory effect of 3% can be obtained by thermomechanical cycling.
