摘要
According to the Neoplatonic point of view mathematics including musical theory as laid down in Boethius' Introduction to Musical Theory as well as art products anagogically lead the recipient to higher levels of understanding. Both were expected to unfold certain transcendent principles and therefore to have the potential of directing the recipient back to these higher principles. The principles of intervals are number ratios that presuppose number who is substantially constituted by the intelligible principles of identity and otherness. Since identity and otherness is a central subject of philosophy and since both constitute souls that govern all kinds of harmony including intervals, musical theory has a clear anagogic potential. A profound knowledge of the appropriate principles of music and accordingly of other arts will enable the artist to successfully create anagogic art.
