Sperm chromosomal abnormalities in infertile men

The purpose of this study was to determine if infertile men with oligospermia, asthenospermia, or teratospermia have an elevated risk of chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm. Sperm chromosomal abnormalities from infertile men with normal somatic karyotypes were analyzed using the human sperm-hamster oocyte fusion system and multicolour fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). Sperm karyotype analysis demonstrated that the infertile men had an increased frequency of numerical chromosomal abnormalities in their sperm compared to normal control donors (X-2 = 26.6, p<0.001). Multicolour FISH analysis was assayed for chromosomes 1, 12, 13, 21, X and Y. There was a significant increase in the frequency of disomy for chromosome 1, 13, 21 and XY disomy compared, to control donors. These data demonstrate an elevated frequency of numerical chromosomal abnormalities in sperm of infertile men.
