In 1996 when Keio University acquired the Gutenberg Bible, the Humanities Media Interface Project was launched to digitise historic books. Intended to pave the way for a planned Digital Research Library, HUMI is an interfaculty initiative with several sub-projects. One of HUMI's main tasks has been to establish a safe and effective method for the digitisation of old, fragile books. Starting with the digitisation of the Gutenberg Bible at Keio in 1997 and in the Cambridge University Library in 1998, the HUMI Project has actively pursued cooperative ventures with research libraries and museums abroad Following the collaborative digitisation of the Gutenberg Bibles in the Gutenberg Museum in Mainz in 1999 and the British Library in March 2000, HUMI has promoted the inter-library exchange of digital images of historic books.
