Planar Trapezoidal Monopole Antenna for TVWS CPF

This paper presents design and simulation of a wide band antenna for Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) in the TV White Space (TVWS) spectrum band operating between 470 MHz-700 MHz. A printed planar monopole antenna configuration has been examined which provides larger bandwidth than a conventional wire monopole. Low cost FR4 substrate with epsilon(r) = 4.4 and tan delta = 0.02 has been used to design the antenna. The antenna is fed by a microstrip line whose width is same as that of the base of the monopole antenna. The ground plane is etched on the other side of the substrate and it can extend up to the base of the trapezoid. Total volume of the antenna is 198.9 x 150 x 1.6 mm(3). The antenna shows an impedance bandwidth for VSWR <= 2 in the frequency range of 470 MHz-700 MHz. The gain of this antenna is between 2.44 dB to 3.36 dB in the entire band of operation. The radiation pattern is omnidirectional in both E and H-planes. Radiation and total efficiency of the designed planar trapezoidal monopole antenna is approximately 99 %.
