摘要
A study was conducted to examine the nature of the marital earnings premium among black men in South Africa. Black men in South Africa who are married are estimated to earn about 23% more at the cross section than men who have never married, after controlling for a wide range of observable characteristics. A well-documented finding internationally is that men who are married earn significantly more than men who are not married, even after controlling for differences in the observable characteristics of these men. The September 2004 Labor Force Survey was used to reveal the existence of a strong marital earnings premium for black men in cross-sectional regressions and to compare the premium for marriage and cohabitation. The six waves of the recently released Labor Force Survey Panel from 2001 to 2004 were used, while the first national panel of this kind is available in South Africa.
