Extrinsic toughness mechanisms of Al-Li alloys 2090 and 2090+Ce

摘要
The growth behavior of long fatigue cracks for high-strength Al-Li alloy 2090 was investigated, and was compared with that of traditional Al alloy 7075. The extrinsic toughening mechanism in Paris and II zone has been revealed. Furthermore, the influence of Ce on the long fatigue crack growth behavior in alloy 2090 was studied. Nominal growth resistance of long fatigue cracks in alloy 2090 and 2090+Ce is superior to that of alloy 7075, which is attributed to crack closure near threshold and delamination toughness in II zone, and extrinsic toughness effect in Paris zone results from the combined effect of crack closure and delamination toughness. A significant improvement in the intrinsic growth resistance can be obtained by adding Ce into alloy 2090.
