Voltage Stability Enhancement Capabilities of LTCT and STATCOM in a Power System

摘要
The issues of continuous occurrence of voltage collapse due to insufficient quantity of reactive power reserve available in a power system to improve the voltage has been a growing concern to power system utilities. This paper discusses the effect of both Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) and Load Tap Changing Transformer (LTCT) on the voltage stability of a power system. The impacts of these power electronic based devices are also demonstrated on the L-Index values of the load nodes and the minimum allowable load of each node of the power system. The effectiveness of the methods presented is tested on the practical Southern Indian 10-bus power system. Simulation results obtained show that STATCOM FACTS device could be of greater advantage in the analysis of voltage stability when compared with LTCT.
