Given the data (p(i),t(i),y(i)), i = 1,..., m, m >= 3, we give necessary and sufficient conditions which guarantee the existence of the weighted least squares estimate for a Gaussian type function. To this end, we suggest a choice of the suitable initial approximation for an iterative minimization, and give some numerical examples. (c) 2004 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
