Primary energy sources and greenhouse effect. In the frame of the diminution of fossil energy and climate change, the two most difficult demands to satisfy are providing electricity to megalopolises and fuels for transportation. Renewable energies have to be promoted but will not be able to replace fossil fuels in their current uses before several decades. According to the previsions for this century, carefulness is necessary to preserve the future of humanity and the environment. (C) 2003 Academie des sciences.
