The effect of erosion parameters on the erosion rate of ceramics

The erosion tests were performed on the different types of commercially available aluminas, syalons and silicon carbides using silica. alumina and silicon carbide particles as erodents. The effects of target, erodent and system variables oil erosion rate were examined. The different erodents caused different mechanisms of erosion, either by lateral cracking or small-scale chipping. The relative hardness of the target and erodent does not provide a clear prediction of' erosion resistance. Microtoughness is found to give a good indication of erosion resistance with the materials tested.
