To fight unemployment and poverty, South Africa is searching for entrepreneurs who take risks, break new grounds and innovate. Yet, it is unclear if government intervention can foster entrepreneurial activity. This paper examines the South African system for financing SMMEs and analyses the strengths and weaknesses of the system in place. To address these concerns, a series of in-depth interviews was conducted with key staff members of government institutions and private institutions such as banks and consultants to get an understanding of how these entities work together. The paper concludes with suggestions to improve the system through a new way of intensification.
