In the light of recent restrictions on chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFCs) as refrigerants, the potential of cold air refrigeration machines is re-examined. A small cold air refrigerator based on reverse Brayton cycle is developed. As the critical component of the refrigerator, a small flow rate high-speed cryogenic turboexpander with new type of aerodynamic bearings is designed. The thermodynamic performance of the air refrigerator and the mechanical performance of the turboexpander have been tested.
