From historical materialism to the labour theory of value

The relation of Karl Marx with the historical materialism and the labour theory of value must be studied in terms both philosophical and economic, promoting a debate between both groups of scholars. Rather than a concern with the debate idealism-materialism and its application to the study of history, the materialist approach given by Marx to his philosophical and social analysis led him to study the contemporary society as an economic structure approachable theoretically in terms increasingly scientific-mathematical, resulting in a "labour theory of value" which was his great contribution to the history of philosophical and scientific ideas.
